Indonesia has a progressive growth in Pangasius production. In 2018, the national production was 391,151 tons – an increase of 22.2% from the previous year. Here, Pangasius is mostly sold alive in the traditional markets, and some are processed into fillet or smoked fish. Production of pangasius fillet in Indonesia is about 1.000 tons per month, where a high proportion of it was exported to Saudi Arabia. The Indonesian Catfish Industry Association (APCI) is targeting China, Singapore and the USA for the next export destination. For China and Singapore market, the main challenge is the price competitiveness. Meanwhile, for the USA market, the main challenge is to meet the country’s standards and quality requirement (in this regards, is the United States Department of Agriculture requirements). In Indonesia, the Pangasius production centres (farms) are North Sumatra, Riau, Jambi, South Sumatra, Lampung, West Java, East Java and South Kalimantan provinces. Meanwhile, there are only 13 fillet processors across Indonesia at the moment, which located in North Sumatra (2), West Java (2), and East Java (9). The processing plant’s production capacity is ranging from 20 – 300 tons/month, and they recognised the stability of raw materials supply as their primary challenge.
